Ackk Studios is developing a new RPG inspired by Earthbound, and Ysbryd Games is publishing it. The game has just had its title announced as Yiik: A Post-Modern, American made JRPG. The first real trailer for the game has just been released by the company, and it highlights what you would expect from a game claiming to be inspired by Earthbound.
To give some background, here is what the story of Yiik: A Post-Modern RPG is, except it is still being called Y2K on the Ackk Studios’ website. “When an erratically behaving elevator claims the life of a young woman, unemployed recent college graduate Alex Eggleston takes to a primitive 1990s message-board to find answers about the death of this stranger. His quest for answers leads to more questions as his research points him to a mysterious van the internet has dubbed the ‘Death Cab.’ This Vehicular oddity roams the game’s city and countryside. Who is driving it? And despite the death toll surrounding the vehicle, who does no one seem to recognize its threat? The ‘Mother series’ and Haruki Murakami provides the inspiration for the quirky characters and the thought-provoking script. These elements come together in a dramatic and mysterious story rife with emotional depth to bring the player on a journey.”
The game’s hipster main character, Alex, attacks with vinyl records, and throws cats to activate distant switches. Yiik: A Post-Modern RPG focuses on delivering “A gripping narrative, an expansive world, memorable characters, and an emotionally moving score.” These staples of JRPG’s have been combined with Ackk Studios’ taste in game design to create the character driven interesting spectacle that is Yiik: A Post-Modern RPG.
The developers have not only made the game zany, like using a stuffed panda for defense, but have also added many other features to set Yiik: A Post-Modern RPG apart from other games in the genre. The game has action, platforming, and “meticulously designed story-based dungeons.” Along with the story dungeons, the developers have tied in special randomly generated dungeons called, “The Mind Dungeon.” These special dungeons will give the player a chance to level up beyond the standard experience, along with delivering more puzzles and even story elements.
Another aspect that separates Yiik: A Post-Modern RPG from other games is the level difference between the main characters and enemies. The game purposefully sets up enemies to be “significantly more powerful than the characters.” This difference forces players to strategize more, and utilize spells that will even the playing field in various ways. Some ways are to strengthen the player characters, weaken the enemy, limit enemy attacks, and utilizing “Trap Spells.”
Yiik: A Post-Modern RPG has no set release date, but is supposed to be coming out late 2015. It will launch on Wii U, Playstation 4, Playstation Vita, PC, Mac, and Linux.
