What Remains of Edith Finch is the newest video game being made by developer Giant Sparrow, who are based in Santa Monica, California. The game follows Edith as she explores the Finch house to discover why she is the last one alive. Giant Sparrow just released a new trailer for the game introducing the house.
What Remains of Edith Finch is “a collection of short stories about a cursed family in Washington state.” These stories are all experienced in first person, and end with the family member’s death. The stories range from the early 1900’s all the way up to the present day. Since it is a collection of different stories of different people within the Finch family, the gameplay and tone are varied from story to story.
At E3 this year, Giant Sparrow will be demoing the introduction to What Remains of Edith Finch. People will be able to play the first part of the game along with one story. They’ll be introduced to the eccentric Finch house, and get to experience one of the lives that influenced it. The creative director at Giant Sparrow released a post on the Playstation blog, and explained what they wanted to do with the Finch house. “The Finch family house, by the way, is crazy. The family has been living here for the last hundred years and each generation adds on to it. By the time Edith arrives the house is an enormous artifact influenced by a range of eccentric, stubborn folks. Hopefully it’s also a place that comes across as believable and familiar. Our goal has been to make the house feel fantastical but at the same time like it was all made out of stuff you could buy at Home Depot.”
This new game is very different from The Unfinished Swan, which they created “to evoke the awe and wonder of classic children’s books.” They want playing What Remains of Edith Finch to feel like opening a book of short stories. However, they believe that at their core, both games are very similar, since they both circle around “what it feels like to be a child, encountering forces beyond your control.”
What Remains of Edith Finch is coming out exclusively for the Playstation 4 sometime in 2016. Their website has information on the game and so does the Sony Playstation website. My question for today is since each of these stories have ended in death, and the game is the story of Edith Finch, will she die at the end?
