Wandersong; The Song that Never Ends

Wandersong is a game where you play as a bard who sings wherever they go. Some people love this, but others are just plain annoyed that you insist on singing everything. The game is a side scroller where you interact with the world through your singing, but it is more about figuring out how your singing can interact, then memorizing different note patterns and reusing them throughout the game. The game is being developed by Greg “Banov” Lobanov.

In Wandersong the goddess Eya started the universe with her music. Now she is planning on starting a new song, which she does every now and then. The only issue is that this will effectively reset all of existence. The angel is a messenger from Eya, but feels the love Eya has for everything that exists, which makes it difficult for her to proclaim the effective doom of the world. This is where the bard comes in. He learns that he can save the Earth is he learns how to sing a magical melody called, the Earthsong. However, the only way to discover the sacred melody is to travel through peril after peril and visit each of the planet’s spirit guides to collect the melody piece by piece.

In Wandersong, “Your singing will be able to move objects, change the direction of wind, clear fog, summon birds, pacify ghosts, alter the flow of time, or a hundred other things… depending on what you sing to!”

The emphasis of Wandersong is on the narrative and the many different playful interactions you can have with characters through your singing. The story has been said to have flavors of “Earthbound, Over the Garden Wall, and My Neighbor Totoro.” The “first Act” of the game is already finished and playable. The foundation for the entire game is ready, including having a level editor and a good idea of where the game is going and what it will look like.

Wandersong is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter. If you want to see more pictures and gifs, the game’s tumblr/devlog is here. So, how do you feel about a song where you make up your own songs throughout the game?
