Mutant Football League is currently under development by Digital Dreams Entertainment. This game is a parody of American football, and a spiritual successor to the Sega Genesis cult classic, Mutant League Football. The original game’s creator, Michael Mendheim, is working with Digital Dreams Entertainment to make this game everything the fans of the over the top violent sports game wanted in a successor.
Mutant Football League is a sports game in loose terms. Monsters (such as robots, zombies, demons, etc.) make up the players in the league. While normal American football has a bunch of rules and regulations, Monster Football League is a lot more relaxed in many areas, and encourages players to punch, kick, and all around destroy each other. Besides honoring the original game and fans of the series, the three main areas of focus in this game are to feature “deep strategy, over-the-top violence, laugh-out-loud gross-out humor, and of course those signature Dirty Trick plays.”
Each of the teams in Mutant Football League has their own special tricks and specialties they can use to take the advantage in games. A few examples that have been given are; Bribe the Ref, Slash n Bash, and Ginormous. Bribe the Ref is a Dirty Trick play that has the team pay the ref to look the other way as they bend the already incredibly flexible rules. Slash n Bash has your running back pull out a rusty nail covered club to whack any defensive player that tries to come near him. Ginormous lets your blitzing defensive player grow to five times his normal size to make him just about impossible to block.
Michael Mendheim explained, “It’s the 20th anniversary of the original game, so this is an ideal time to create a new over-the-top football game featuring monsters and mutants for the many fans who have been clamoring for it. The fans have kept their interest in this series alive over the years and we want to reward them for their loyalty. We are creating a new and very different game that pays homage to classic monster sports, and parodies the owners, coaches, sponsors, and everything else that makes football such a great American sport.”
A few key features of Mutant Football League are the booby trap filled stadiums, customizable characters, Full Season Mode, and MFL All-Star players that parody their real life counterparts. The stadiums are packed with crazed, weapon wielding fans. The playing fields are filled with traps and obstacles like, “land mines, toxic moats, thin ice, and lava flows.” There is also deadly weather such as acid rain, meteor showers, and lightning strikes. In Mutant Football League, you will be able to create and name your own team and players. You’ll be able to train them, give them attacks, and finish it off with personal weapons and armor. Full Season Mode is a 13 game season where you have to win games and manage your team’s health to move on to the playoffs for a chance at winning the Mayhem Bowl. The stars of the league use “special-skills, abilities, weapons, and trash-talking” to parody their real life counterparts. A few examples of these All-Stars are, Slob Brawnkowski, Killa Kong Suh, Cam Neutron, and Nefarious Thomas.
Mutant Football League is being created using the Unity Engine. The game is planned to release in early 2016 on Steam or PC. However, they also have plans for releasing on Playstation 4 and Xbox One later with an eventual mobile version being made for iOS and Android.
